Thwane… is the native Tswana word for caracal, a very common predator in our area. Thwane Safari’s was established more than a decade ago as one of Africa’s best Bow Hunting Ranches.
Big Game Hunter, outfitter and owner Marius Barnard has one goal with his sons Rhuan Barnard (PH) and Marno Barnard (PH) in mind – to offer his clients a high quality safari.
Marius and family will be your hosts for the duration of your stay and will ensure that you receive the best hospitality at all times due to personalized service.
Marius Barnard and his sons have been keen hunters since childhood and has developed a great love for nature conservation.
This 10 000 acres of true African wildlife paradise, is home to the Barnard family and situated in the heart of the Limpopo Province (malaria free) at the end of the Waterberg mountain range, a mere 4 hour drive from the OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg. Marius has personalized his very upmarket Kwena Lodge with more than 40 trophies hunted by himself that includes Buffalo, Lion, Elephant, Hippo, Nile Crocodile and various plains game to smaller antelope like the very rear Black Leechwe, Blue Duiker and Sharpe’s Grysbok.
Marius’s hunting safari’s took him all over Africa including countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Under Marius’s leadership, knowledge, expertise and 25 years of experience Thwane Safari’s is an outstanding outfit. Rhuan and Marno sons of Marius and Leoni are directly involved on the Ranch as PH’s both with outstanding hunting skills. At Thwane Safari’s we value family and friends therefore the whole family will ensure that your every need is taken care of and that your visit to South Africa is a enjoyable and memorable one.
Kwena is the native Tswana word for crocodile. Upmarket accommodation at Kwena is ideally positioned to offer our clients a taste of Africa at its best with an existing view over the crocodile waterhole. The very luxurious rooms invite guests to abandon themselves to total relaxation, all rooms are air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms and DSTV. Beyond the pool, stretching out toward the crocodile waterhole, waterbuck, impala and many other species can be seen. Our traditional home-style cooked meals served in the spacious dining area are always one of our clients favourites as we go the extra mile after a successful day. The outdoor rustic Boma is designed for social gatherings around the fire, contributing to various discussions, experiences and happenings of the day, words fail to capture the atmosphere around the cracking fire and night sounds of the bush.
We also encourage non-hunters to join family or friends on their hunting expedition as we offer a wide variety of activities.. For the non-hunter (observer) the following activities are available, as we believe it is the whole experience that counts, for friendships are built by offering not only good hunting but also quality accommodation, service and facilities.

Hunting is more than a pastime or an autumn ritual for some; it’s a way of life. Dedicated hunters see the world with a special perspective. When they drive through farmland they don’t see wheat field and pastures, they see lost upland bird habitat. When they tour a new shopping mall, they don’t see new businesses, they see destroyed wildlife habitat. When they pass a forest, they don’t see trees, they see bedding cover, travel routes and feeding sites.
The Lodge is equipped with a full medical kit as well as tablet’s for general nausea, cramps, diarrhoea, headaches(aspirin/paracetamol) and pain. Every room contains insect repellent, hairdryer, shampoo, shower gel, soap and body lotion.
The following items should be brought along:
We suggest you bring the rifle or rifles you are most comfortable with, we also have a selection of appropriate calibers and ammunition available for hire if you feel comfortable in doing so. We recommend anything in the .30 caliber range for plains game and if hunting one of the Big 5 it is required by law that the minimum caliber should be 375. Depending on how many animals you intend to shoot we suggest abount 60 rounds of ammunition per caliber.
South African law prohibits any semi-automatic firearms and a limit of 200 rounds per caliber.
It is essential to complete a temporary firearm permit application (SAP520) NB! It is important that the form is completed in black ink and must remain unsigned until the documents is finalized in front of the police official issuing the actual permit at the airport.
